Tour Details

The TIJI festival, also known as (TEN CHI) is a vibrant and culturally significant celebration observed in Lo Manthang, a remote town in the Upper Mustang of Nepal. Lo Manthang, situated in the Himalayas, is a culturally rich area with a history deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism and ancient Tibetan culture.

The TIJI festival spans three days. Typically occurs in May or early June symbolizing the victory of good, over evil. It is an occasion embraced with excitement by both the residents and tourists hailing from different regions of Nepal and beyond who gather to experience this special cultural event.

The festival revolves around showcasing Tibetan Buddhist customs, dances, and performances. A key attraction of the event is the “Tsa Chham” or “Mask Dance,” featuring dressed monks engaging in dances portraying different gods, demons, and fantastical beings. These performances are thought to protect against forces and bestow blessings upon the community.

The TIJI festival also includes a tradition known as the “Ritual of Destruction of the Demon ” which signifies the victory of Buddhism, over powers. In this ritual, monks reveal a thangka ( painting) depicting the demon only to destroy it afterward symbolizing the triumph of righteousness, over malevolence.

During the festival, the town of Lo Manthang buzzes with hues, melodies, and the scent of Tibetan dishes. Residents don their garments as prayer flags flutter and vibrant decorations line the streets.

The TIJI festival not only serves as a religious and cultural event but also plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting the unique heritage of the Upper Mustang region. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Tibetan Buddhist culture and witness centuries-old traditions come to life in a breathtaking Himalayan setting.
